Butterfly Bush | Botanical Name: | Buddleia | | Life Cycle: | Hardy Perennial | Description/Size:
| This woody perennial in northern states, shrub in the south, responds well to pruning, but have patience and label well at planting. Shoots are slow to emerge. In the spring only, cut back to where the new growth appears, allowing no more than 1 foot of old wood. For us yankees, this may mean clear to the ground in hard winters. Thereafter, pinch the tips frequently until June to promote side branches, creating a shorter plant and more flowers. (Being lazy, I use the garden shears.) Buddleias do well in any soil but hate wet winter “feet,” which rot roots, so site them in raised beds. All Butterfly Bush are hardy to Zone 5. |
