Very similar to ""Kent Beauty"" except this one has longer ""hop-like cones"" that are pure ivory with pink flowers poking out from underneath. The name sounds like the final exam for Limbo studies, but I assure you, it's gorgeous!

Extra wide, white margins make this variety stand out as much as its mild sweet marjoram flavor & white flowers. Obedient mounds fit into any mixed container, strawberry jar or bed edge or rock garden. Avoid harsh afternoon sun.
$ 3.79

Rue, Blue Mound

Ruta graveolens `Blue Mound'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b

The dwarf mounding habit of this ancient herb makes an excellent mate with roses, in groups of 7 or more. The semi-evergreen blue foliage contrasts well with almost any perennial, especially roses & yellow conifers for a winter color display. Rue's foliage, sunlight & skin MAY result in skin rashes. Please don't eat it.

Rue's foliage, sunlight and skin may result in skin rashes. Please don't eat it.

SAGE - SALVIAS

All Sages/Salvia were "Herb of the Year," promoting it as the youth herb as it's been used to darken hair, improve memory, even ease wrinkles. Wishful thinking? Not entirely. We use it in the bath to soothe muscles, drink the tea to ease nerves and indigestion and you'd be WISE to add the silver and white varieties to your white garden. Sage is the common name for salvias, a plant group boasting 600+ varieties. Very generally speaking, sages love the sun, heat, and dry draining slopes, but check out each introduction for differences in hardiness & cultural needs. My favorite quality, however, is the variety of color and leaf shapes which is always welcome in otherwise subtle herb greenery.

Sage, Berggarten

Sage, Berggarten
Salvia officinalis `Berggarten'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 2x3 feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Butterfly, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Medicinal, Ornamental, Tea

Broad, oval shaped leaves on this compact plant make 'Berggarten' easier to use. It's so much nicer, there are few reasons to buy the common sage anymore. ""Flash fry"" leaves in a bit of olive oil, only about 30 sec. Remove. Cool. Crumble & use like bacon bits. Rated great variety for southern states. In the north, unfortunatly, it rarely blooms as flowering tips freeze off.
$ 3.79

Sage, Berggarten Variegated

Sage, Berggarten Variegated
Salvia officinalis 'Variegated Berggarten'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5a 9b
Light: Full Sun
Height: 2 x 3 feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Flowers: Late Spring
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Butterfly, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Medicinal, Ornamental, Tea

Mark gained this cool variegated plant from Scott Kresge (Emily May Garden Shop in Pen Argyl, PA) at the Herb Society of America's Cleveland Conference. Just as winter hardy as 'Berggarten' with clean, blue-green and white variegation on a leaf that is closer to the slender outline of straight S. officinalis. Prune out anything that reverts.
$ 3.79

Sage, Garden Dwarf

Sage, Garden Dwarf
Salvia officinalis 'Compacta' (Nana)
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 1 x 2 Foot
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Flowers: Middle Spring
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Butterfly, Container, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Hedges/Shrubs, Medicinal, Ornamental, Tea

Because it's an exact miniature version of common sage without the ""unkept"" look, it's a natural for mixed containers and child-sized hedges. Plus it's covered with blue flower spikes in the spring. Use 1 tsp (fresh) per pound of pork to make sausage, or add to the classic turkey dressing.
$ 3.79

Sage, Garden Golden Variegated

Sage, Garden Golden Variegated
Salvia officinalis 'Icterina'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 12 x 24 Inches
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Flowers: Early Winter
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Butterfly, Container, Culinary, Fragrant, Medicinal, Ornamental, Tea

Our stock plants survived -18 F degrees last winter, from which we took your cuttings. Leaves have brilliant yellow margins around green centers. These obedient golden mounds create a 7-8 month show, here, in front of ""Bronze Fennel"", ""Purple Ruffles Basil"" or, like one of our favorite beds, in the midst of other sages.
$ 3.79

Sage, Garden Purple

Sage, Garden Purple
Salvia officinalis 'Purpurea'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 2-3 Feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Butterfly, Culinary, Fragrant, Medicinal, Ornamental, Tea

Purple colored new leaves turn green as they mature, giving plant a bi-colored look. ""Purple Sage"" offers great color contrast and flavor. Hardy in northern Ohio in all but the coldest winters.
$ 3.79

Sage, Garden Tricolor

Sage, Garden Tricolor
Salvia officinalis 'Tricolor'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 2-3 Feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Butterfly, Culinary, Fragrant, Ornamental, Tea

Deep pink, white and green stroked leaves make a display in the garden or on the dinner table.
$ 3.79

Sage, Newe Ya’ar’

Salvia X New'e Yare
Cold Tolerance: Zone 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b-11
Light: Full Sun
Height: 2 x 3 Foot
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Common Uses:Bath, Bees, Borders, Butterfly, Culinary, Fragrant, Medicinal, Ornamental, Tea

Finally, a garden sage for the deep South! This is an Israeli variety bred to mimic the humidity tolerance of the tropical Sage, but the flavor of Salvia officinalis. Long, ""Garden Sage-"" like leaves provide plenty of harvest for your next meal. $ 3.79

Salad Burnet (Di-yu)

Sanguisorba minor
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 4-18in.
Water: Normal
Soil: Loamy
Common Uses:Borders, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Groundcover, Medicinal

Crumble cucumber flavored young shoots and fruit over salads and infuse in vinegars and tomato juice. Older semi-evergreen leaves are tough, best left unused. Its rosette form looks lacy in herbal lawns. Referred to in Chinese medicine as ""Di-yu"" and is used to stop bleeding.
$ 3.79

Samphire \ Sea Fennel

Crithmum maritimum
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 1-2 Feet
Water: Dry
Soil: Sandy-Well Drained
Common Uses:Borders, Butterfly, Culinary

Rare plant to find & even more difficult to research. Native to British cliffs where it has long been used as a salt substitute and an essential ingredient for pickles. Blue-green, highly dissected fleshy succulent looks really.... WEIRD! Our Jamaica Bay, NY customer told us her sea fennel came back year after year until high tide came in and took it out to sea.
$ 3.79

Santolina, Dwarf Gray

Santolina, Dwarf Gray
Santolina chamaecyparissus 'Nana'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b

Height: 18in.
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Flowers: Middle Summer
Common Uses:Borders, Fragrant, Garden Railroads, Hedges/Shrubs, Ornamental, Potpourri, Repellant, Rock Garden

Same bright yellow buttons as other ""Santolina,"" but on silvery-gray, soft foliage. Also used in hedges, knot and rock gardens. Prune in spring after new growth appears. Working at Cedar Point one summer, I had to prune Santolina regularly. I know this sounds weird, but it reminded me of bologna. Moth repellent too.
$ 3.79

Santolina, Green

Santolina, Green
Santolina pinnata (virens)
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b

Height: 4in. to 2 Feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Flowers: Middle Summer
Common Uses:Bedding Plant, Borders, Fragrant, Garden Railroads, Hedges/Shrubs, Ornamental, Potpourri, Repellant

Creamy yellow button blossoms dance over green feathery foliage in July. Can be clipped into a short hedge, in spring after new growth slowly appears or let it grow to 2'. Clipping will prevent flowering. Dry bunches for moth repellent bags.
$ 3.79

Santolina, Rosemary-leaf

Santolina rosmarifolia
Cold Tolerance: Zone 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 1 - 2 Feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Sandy-Loamy
Flowers: Middle Summer
Common Uses:Borders, Fragrant, Garden Railroads, Hedges/Shrubs, Ornamental, Repellant

It may sport the bright yellow buttons you're used to seeing on the regular ""Santolina"" but the foliage is more blue and leathery, i.e., like a rosemary. Like the others, it can be clipped into a short hedge (preventing flowering), in spring after new growth appears, or allowed to grow to 2'. Dry bunches for moth repellent bags. It is a slow comer in spring.
$ 3.79

This annual savory has a more intense aroma & flavor than the common variety due to its higher essential oil content and it is packed with needle-like leaves. Plenty to harvest for peppery flavors in vinegars, salads, any beans, and omelets. Gargle tea for sore throat.
$ 3.29

Savory, Winter

Savory, Winter

Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 1-2 Feet
Water: Normal
Soil: Loamy
Flowers: Middle Summer
Common Uses:Bees, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Medicinal

Winter Savory is ""Summer Savory's"" hardy, spicier cousin, as ""Greek Oregano"" is to ""Sweet Marjoram."" Use care with the robust flavor of this salt and pepper alternative. The German name ""Bohnen-kraut"" translates to ""bean herb."" Flowers are white like a summer ""Candytuft"".
$ 3.79

Savory, Winter Dwarf

Satureja montana subsp. montana 'Nana'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4a 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b 9a 9b
Light: Full Sun to Full Sun
Height: 6in.
Water: Normal
Soil: Full Sun
Flowers: Middle Summer
Common Uses:Alpine Rockery, Bees, Culinary, Edible Flowers, Fragrant, Garden Railroads, Miniature/Faery Garden

A dwarf version of ""Winter Savory"", with small, glossy leaves and delicate white flowers. Such a sweet, creeping herb, that's simply irresistible to faeries or in a rock garden. Alpine variety with all the same uses as the parent plant, but less to harvest. For gardeners and collectors with minimal space.
$ 3.79

Soapwort, Double Pink

Saponaria officinalis 'Flora Plena'
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4a 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b
Light: Full Sun
Height: 18-24in.
Water: Normal
Soil: Any Soil
Flowers: Middle Summer
Common Uses:Butterfly, Cut Flower, Soap Making

In Ohio and many other places, the regular species is an invasive weed,(which we no longer offer in good conscience) but not this one! Full double clusters of bright pink flowers bloom all summer yet they'll not reseed. Still has humble lathering action. A gift from Elaine Kudela, a friend in herb heaven.
$ 3.79

Soapwort, Mulberry Creek Variegated

Saponaria officinalis 'Variegata' MCF Form
Cold Tolerance: Zone 4a 4b 5a 5b 6a 6b 7a 7b 8a 8b
Light: Full Sun
Height: 18 - 24in.
Water: Normal
Soil: Any Soil
Common Uses:Butterfly, Cut Flower, Ornamental, Soap Making

We've worked on this Mulberry Creek introduction for 4 years to develop a stable, variegated pattern. Finally, yellow and striped leaves update this old fashion, pink flowering cottage garden essential. Comparatively, it is less aggressive in spreading, re-seeding and flowering, but wow does it brighten up the garden! I don't mind its mild demeanor. Demi Bown, author of New Encyclopedia of Herbs & Their Uses, upon visiting us, said we had choosen very well, but that this is still only the 'Variegata' form.
